Ethiopian maid kills employer in "self-defense"

A housemaid accused of knifing her boss to death and leaving the woman’s two-year-old daughter to die says she acted in self defence.

The 21-year-old Ethiopian is being held by police for the brutal double murder at the family’s Ras Al Khaimah apartment.

OLF is indeed irrelevant

I have read the fascinating article of Ato Shiferaw Abebe posted on Ethiomedia some weeks ago, which as I saw, contained nothing other than the vivid realities that characterize OLF today. On the other hand I was also extremely disappointed at Ato Dummessa Dimma’s response, filled with the usual lies and racial hatred akin to former OLF leaders.

I am astounded and disturbed by a gratuitous vilification, denunciation and resentment of Ato Shiferaw Abebe towards OLF. One can feel the fury of his pen and his unmitigated rants and bristling just to rebut a simple resolution by OLF inviting all stakeholders in the Empire for united front against the Wayannee controlled regime.

Is OLF's call for alliance really meaningful?

Following its 4th regular session early this month, the OLF National Council issued a communiqué wherein it calls upon “all the forces opposed to the dictatorial regime of the TPLF to struggle for liberation, freedom, democracy, the rule of law, peace, and prosperity”. The communiqué states that there is “no more option left except to rise up in unison and struggle to get rid of the tyrannical minority rule.”

The electoral board's unjust ruling against a re-run

The election board’s emotionally charged rejoinder to the opposition this week, in which it brusquely rejected a rerun of the election, surprised no one; least of all the opposition that in the words of one of its leaders, Merera Gudina, was soothingly testing the “integrity of institutions” in full view of the public and the international community. But many have qualms about the need when the prevailing convention is that the board has no integrity to be tested. And they may indeed be right.

The banner of hope must fly high in Ethiopia

Despair and resignation will not change the lot of Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Turning to the Lord and do the right things will. Nothing is impossible to the Lord. If we put our souls and minds to doing what is required and expected of us, then a lot could change and change for the better. This in turn owes to a sense of personal obligation.

Ethiopia's electoral body rejects election rerun call

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia's electoral board on Wednesday rejected opposition demands for a fresh election after the government last month won a landslide victory that the Europe Union and the United States said failed to meet international standards.

The ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and allied parties won 545 seats in the 547-member parliament, giving long-serving Prime Minister Meles Zenawi another five years in power.

There is absolutely no shame in losing elections; and certainly there is no shame, in itself, in losing to the EPRDF party. In fact, in the 2010 election, the shame was not even in losing the election at all; it was in “winning” - winning in the way that the EPRDF did. In a country where there are at least 70 ethnic groups, as many languages, and more than 20 contending political parties and alliances, winning every possible regional council and national parliament seat - that is shameful.
